Acknowledgments:

I am grateful to Dr. M.V. Shustrova (St.Petersburg Veterinary Academy) for the help with the collecting of mites and preparing the preliminary drawings. The present work was finan-cially supported by the Grant «The Scientific Collections of the Russian Academy of Sciences Zoological Institute», obtained from the Ministry of Science of the Russian Federation (Registration №96-03-16).

Annotation:

The morphological description of all post- embry-onic developmental stages of Otodectes cynotis, the mite responsible for the otodectic mange (otodectosis) in carnivores is presented. The features of an external morphology of mites of the genus Otodectes dwelling in the spacially closed microhabitats, in comparison with the other genera of the subfamily Psoroptinae parasitic on skin are revealed. It is shown that the morpho-physiological features of O.cynotis are related to its parasitic way of life. The adaptive similarity between O.cynotis and endoparasitic mites of the family Sarcoptidae is noted. The attention is drawn to a possible generalization of invasion accompanied by the infestation of the body surface that is of high importance for the protection of precious fur-bearing animals breeded in captivity.
